Environmentally Friendly House Paint

We are committed to delivering eco-friendly paint products that are effective, safe, and reduce environmental impact.

Eco-Friendly Paint

Benjamin Moore recognizes our commitment to social, environmental, and economic responsibility. We are committed to developing eco-friendly paints to reduce environmental impact, ensure workplace safety for all employees, and give back to the communities in which we operate.

Anyone who understands the Benjamin Moore philosophy can see the love we infuse into every aspect of our business, from our high-quality eco-friendly paint products, our annual employee volunteer efforts for community and environmental causes, to our caring relationships with organizations.

Environmentally friendly colors

The core of Benjamin Moore's business is operating a paint business that prioritizes safety, adheres to government regulations, and preserves the quality of the environment for the well-being of future generations. We are committed to operating in accordance with our Environmental, Health, Safety, and Security (EHSS) policy and develops environmentally friendly paint products that meet legal standards.

We maintain a robust Environmental Policy Management System (EHSS), which includes ongoing risk and environmental impact analysis, prevention and detection of policy violations, and the goal of minimizing the environmental impact of our activities, products, and services. EHSS standards are established at the corporate level to establish standards for proactive environmental initiatives and address potential uncontrolled impacts, such as energy and resource consumption. Benjamin Moore adheres to these standards and consistently implements them in our environmental paint business.

Our Environmental Leadership Team, comprised of corporate and local representatives, is responsible for ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, performance, and environmental factors impacting Benjamin Moore. This responsibility includes overall oversight, setting standards and prioritizing business plans, setting goals, driving performance, providing resource guidance, and communicating to company leadership. The team's mission is to establish a work process that aligns with the Environmental Health, Safety, Work Process and Security Management System, resulting in the development of an effective Environmental Health System (EHSS) policy and the creation of a sound environmental and safety mindset within the organization.

Eco-friendly colors and climate change

Climate change is forcing companies to adapt to changing weather patterns and strive to be socially responsible. That's why the Benjamin Moore team is constantly looking for opportunities to do our part to reduce our environmental impact. In 2020, Benjamin Moore began setting greenhouse gas emission standards to help reduce emissions over the next 20 years.

Energy management

Benjamin Mohr uses electricity for lighting, operations and manufacturing processes. We use natural gas for heating and diesel for transportation. For even greater energy savings, we’ve replaced more than 1,600 light bulbs at our headquarters with LEDs. In addition, our R&D center has installed 1.7 megawatts of solar panels for Constellation Energy Resources since 2010. The panels generate more than 2.4 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually and provide approximately 70% of the facility’s annual electricity needs. Benjamin Mohr purchases the electricity generated from the grid under a 20-year power purchase agreement.

Sustainable transportation system

In the fourth quarter of 2020, Benjamin Moore initiated several transportation initiatives aimed at reducing the number of trucks used to distribute goods to different destinations. This included the use of ORTEC routing software to plan routes from manufacturing plants to retail locations. The benefits of these initiatives will begin to be realized in 2021.

We are constantly improving our routes, purchasing new, efficient trailers, and regularly inspecting and maintaining our 318 trucks and trailers. These efforts have resulted in increased fuel efficiency, reduced costs, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Environmentally friendly colors and waste and waste management

Benjamin Moore continues to explore new ways to reduce waste and reuse rinsing water to reduce the amount of water used in manufacturing processes. We recycle over 900,000 pounds of rinsing water and solvents into economy-grade products and recycled more than 600,000 gallons of paint cans in 2020.

Our distribution centers ship hundreds of thousands of gallons of paint daily. We have implemented numerous recycling policies to reduce transportation waste, including recycling of wooden pallets, corrugated cardboard, wrapping film, and, in some locations, recycling of primary color cans used in paint mixing. Waste reduction efforts have extended to our offices, where we have restricted the use of single-use plastics in the cafeteria, including food containers, straws, and serving utensils. We also eliminated nearly 15,000 water bottles by installing water dispensers at our headquarters, equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1,594 times.

Environmentally friendly colors and nature conservation

Benjamin More's research and development center in Flanders, New Jersey, and our eco-friendly paint manufacturing and distribution center in Pell City, Alabama, have received Conservation Certification® from the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring and enhancing wildlife habitats.

A team of local volunteers has allocated 67 acres of land to provide habitat for native birds and pollinators and removed invasive species. Our outdoor classroom in Pell City, Alabama, uses Fishing Creek Wetlands Habitat as a venue for conservation education experiences for local middle and high school students, focusing on topics tied to classroom subjects and state STEM education requirements. Topics include water quality monitoring, wetland species identification, and planting native plants and food sources.

In 2020, our team in Pell City received the Formal Learning Project award from WHC at a virtual interagency conference.
